In the many years that I have been around dogs and around other people who are also around dog, I have never even once heard anyone dispute the fact that extraordinary measures must be taken at all times to keep dogs and puppies safe from harm. In fact, many dog owners, including myself, claim that the safety of dogs and puppies takes a backseat only to proper and healthful feeding.
But what is dog and puppy safety, really? Although all the owners of dogs with whom I have ever spoken understand the significance and always strive to achieve the goal, their definitions may vary quite a bit.
Let us together examine the issue of dog safety and compile a list which could be followed by all dog owners. So, here we go.
- Dogs must be kept away from food which can harm them and those are just about all foods which are not specifically geared toward the dog’s diet. (i.e., human food, cat food, etc.).
- Dogs must at all times be safely contained within homes, backyards, kennels, etc.
- Dogs must never be allowed to ride in any kind of vehicles (bicycles, motorcycles, cars, trucks, boats, etc.) without proper restraints.
- Dogs must never be allowed out in public without a leash when taking walks around the neighborhood, when visiting parks and so on.
- Dogs must be kept away from predatory animals such as hawks, eagles, coyotes, foxes, bears, etc.
As you might guess, keeping your dog safe may involve some expense for a proper leash, a good fencing, a comfortable crate, and a proper car seat or harness. Always keep in mind that your dog’s life may depend on them.
