How to Sew the Best Baby Car Seat Cover

by Claire James on December 19, 2010

There are many ways to go about the process of sewing a baby car seat cover, but it is not a hard task at all. There are so many advantages to making your own custom cover including the most obvious that it is unique and can be used, cleaned and reused as many times as you like. Or you could make more of course.

Just take a look at the Graco Baby Car Seats as well as the range from Britax and Chicco and you will see just how far out and fun you can make your infants seat cover. Imagine what you could do, just let your imagination run wild.

Step I: The initial step is to measure the length and breadth of the seat and the backrest. You will have to add 10 – 12 inches to either of them. The extra fabric is required to completely cover the car seat.

Step 2: Next you need to choose the fabric you would like to use for the infant car seat cover. Cotton and Leather are the best preferences, with Cotton being the preferred choice as it allows for easier breathing and therefore a more comfortable ride for your baby. When you choose the cotton be sure to wash it before you start cutting it because it will shrink in the first wash or two.

Step III: Next, you have to choose the pattern for the baby seat cover. It is advisable to draw the pattern on paper. If you make any mistakes on the fabric, the fabric might not be of any use. Once you have traced the pattern out, add 5 – 6 inches on either side and mark them on the paper. Now join the marks on the paper and cut the paper. Be careful while doing so as it will be used as a stencil on the fabric.

Step 4: Lay the stencil over the fabric and pin them together to make sure they do not move apart. This also guarantees that the tracing will not move and it will be done correctly. Now start cutting the fabric out.

Step V: Its now time to actually ‘stitch’ the baby car seat cover. Wondering how to sew a baby car seat cover? If you have a sewing machine, you can use it or else you can stitch it with your hand. Start by stitching the border of the seat cover. Remember you will have to get the inside out of the seat cover. So, leave a small opening through which you can change the side. Change the side and then stitch the remaining part.

Step 6: Hem up all the edges so that they do not fray and then find the front of the cover. Create slits for the straps to pass through and if necessary create a couple of additional ones so that you can adjust the straps as your baby grows.

Step 7: Attach Velcro tape or elastic to the bay car seat at the anchor points necessary to make it sit snug and secure on the actual baby car seat. Velcro is better as elastic loses its elasticity over time.

This is where you can now enjoy the fruits of your labour and attach the cover to your car seat. It is also a nail biting bit because if the cover does not fit properly or something this is where you will find out, the hard way I think too. But it will fit, and it will look absolutely fantastic!
