It is highly advisable to wash the cover of your baby car seat on a frequent basis, even under normal circumstances. It is not healthy for a baby to sit in seat that has not been washed for a period of time as not only does it gather dust and get dirty from every day use, it also builds up bacteria and creates a very unhygienic environment for your child. If you live in a particularly hot environment then it is recommended that you remove and clean the car seat cover at least once a month.
The Instructions that come with the baby seat provide the best methods and a clear explanation of how to remove the cover and then how to reassemble it once you are done – but since nearly all infant car seats are based around a similar design, the process is the same for nearly all models. I am looking at the Graco Nautilus Car Seat for example.
The Graco Nautilus is a fantastic baby car seat that is modeled around the basic design and is suited for children from 9 months – just as a reference for the application of this process.
1. There are foam inserts in the seat itself that will often fall out during the process of removing the cover, so take note of how they are aligned in their slots since they need to sit a certain way. With the Graco Car Seat I am looking at for example, the foam will only properly fit in the way it is supposed to be, so this makes things a lot easier.
2. While the release button is facing forward, remove the harness buckle by twisting the bottom to fit in the slots at the bottom of the seat.
3. The headrest is a feature on the Graco car seat for example, and is also a feature on many other models, but not always. If you do have the headrest section be sure to remove the cover on this one first.
4. Thread the belt straps in slots at the bottom of the baby car seat cover
5. Now it is time to take the cover off. Start at the headrest and work down the sides of the seat levering off as you go. Once you get to the bottom pry it off the buckle base and you are done. Let’s put it back on now.
6. Reattaching the cover to the baby car seat is not as simple as reversing the process. You need to start from the headrest, for example and that is not a reverse of how we removed the cover in the first place.
7. To the head support, put the white foam and stretch the cover over it carefully
8. When you reattach the shoulder straps, a good tip is to buckle the seat up first and tighten it to make sure you have no twists in the harness. The last thing you want is to make your baby uncomfortable or irritate them and you with a twist right in the middle of the strap.
