Having Trouble Getting Your Baby To Sleep? That’s OK Because a thousand mothers out there are having the exact same problems, and like you they are at their wits end with what to do about it. Here are some hints and tips on how to get your infant to go to sleep.
The problem is not so much the night time sleep because with this sleep you have the routine that goes around it. The whole act of having dinner then a bath, and then finally a bottle helps get your baby relaxed and into the mood for sleeping, but it is during the day that they need that sleep the most, and this is when things get tricky.
For the afternoon nap there are a lot of different tips and tricks that I have tried but the one thing that has worked consistently for me is the car. By taking the children for a drive I can get them to sleep, but even this process requires a deft touch and careful planning. Here are my top tips for getting your toddler to sleep in the car.
I could go on and on about what I have done, but here is a list of dos and dont’s based on what I have found to work best over the years. Obviously if your baby does not have a dummy, or something does not work, then simply ignore it – I am just going off of my own children and using them as an example.
Before I even start, and underlying the success or failure of this process is the type of baby seat you have in your car. I am not talking brand here, it is simply important that the seat you have in your car is both well fitted, has the right type of cover on it, and most importantly is comfortable for your baby. THe first step is to get your toddler into the car for that sleep and the best way to do this is to play on their interests by suggesting a drive to look for diggers or the postman – or whatever. As your toddler gets older they know what the drive means so you need to start being clever about the tactics you use to get them buckled into their baby car seat.
The Second step is to be prepared, and with that I give you some great little tips that as you will see can only have come from years of experience.
If your baby has a dummy then don’t simply give them one. Give yourself a few too! Make sure you have a few extra dummies so that if and when you baby spits it out you can quickly replace it without feeling around under the seats for 5 minutes. This is an especially helpful tip when there are two kids and one can potentially wake the other.
It is essential that you bring some music with you for the drive, and if you are dealing with a Toddler then it is OK to let them choose. Believe it or not, no matter how upbeat the music, if your toddler is tired they will sleep – especially if they are happy, which they will be because you let them choose the music. See how brilliant that is!
The Third Step is to think ahead, and by this I mean thinking about the fact that you eventually have to move your baby or toddler back to the house from the car. Make sure to remove their shoes before you leave (I always forget this) or you risk waking them trying to take them off later.
The 4th step is in the way you drive, and believe it or not the advise I give is to drive completely normally. If you don;t then your baby and/or toddler will suspect that something is up, or at least notice something is different. Remember that it is all about familiarity.
I mentioned earlier about transferring your baby back to the house and this is because I do not recommend leaving them in the car. No matter how temperate the weather, it gets hot in the car very quickly so move them inside always. Again think ahead, and transfer them only after you have prepared their room, so as to make as little noise as possible and make the transfer seamless and easy. Good luck and happy resting parents!
